What is Ruqyah
Ruqyah is an Islamic spiritual practice involving the recitation of specific verses from the Quran, supplications (duas), and prayers. It is primarily used for protection, healing, and removing harmful influences such as evil spirits (jinn), black magic (sihr), the evil eye (ayn), and general spiritual afflictions. Ruqyah is rooted in the belief that the words of Allah, as conveyed in the Quran, have the power to cure and protect from various forms of harm.
Types of Ruqyah :
Ruqyah can be categorized into two main types:
Preventive Ruqyah: This is recited regularly to protect oneself from harm. It involves reciting specific verses and supplications for general protection and well-being.
Therapeutic Ruqyah: This is performed to cure or remove a specific affliction, such as black magic, possession by jinn, or the evil eye. It is usually more intensive and focused on addressing the specific issue affecting the individual.
Key Components of Ruqyah :
Quranic Verses: Certain verses from the Quran are commonly recited during Ruqyah. These include:
Al-Fatiha (Surah Al-Fatiha): The opening chapter of the Quran, considered one of the most powerful chapters for healing.
Ayat Al-Kursi (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:255): Known as the Throne Verse, it is recited for protection from harm.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:102): Specifically recited for protection against black magic.
Surah Al-Falaq (113) and Surah An-Naas (114): Known as the Mu’awwidhat, these two surahs are recited for protection against evil, envy, and harm.
Supplications (Duas): In addition to Quranic verses, specific duas (prayers) taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are recited for protection and healing.
Blowing: After reciting the verses or duas, the practitioner may blow over the affected person or area, believing the healing power of the words is transferred through the breath.
Olive Oil or Water: Sometimes, verses are recited over water or olive oil, which is then used for anointing or drinking, as a means of applying the spiritual remedy.
Conditions and Etiquettes of Ruqyah
Faith and Intention: The effectiveness of Ruqyah depends heavily on the faith and sincerity of the person performing it. The intention should be solely to seek Allah’s help and cure.
Permissibility: Ruqyah should be performed in accordance with Islamic teachings. It must only involve recitation of the Quran, authentic supplications, and actions taught by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Practices involving shirk (associating partners with Allah) or un-Islamic rituals are strictly forbidden.
Self-Ruqyah: Muslims are encouraged to perform Ruqyah on themselves as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) often did. However, seeking the help of a knowledgeable and pious individual is also permissible if needed.
Benefits of Ruqyah
Spiritual Healing: Ruqyah provides spiritual healing by cleansing the heart and soul of impurities and harmful influences.
Protection from Harm: Regular recitation of Ruqyah serves as a protective shield against spiritual and physical harm, including the evil eye, black magic, and jinn.
Peace of Mind: The recitation of Quranic verses and supplications can bring tranquility and peace to the heart, reducing anxiety, stress, and fear.
Who Can Perform Ruqyah
While anyone can perform Ruqyah on themselves, it is important that the person has a sound understanding of the Quran, the correct way to recite it, and the right intention. In cases of severe affliction, seeking assistance from a qualified, knowledgeable, and pious individual who is well-versed in Ruqyah is recommended.
Precautions
Avoid practices that are not based on authentic Islamic teachings, as they can lead to harm rather than healing.
Ruqyah should not replace medical treatment when it is needed. It can be used in conjunction with medical care to seek Allah's help for a cure.
